We hope you enjoy the site, especially when we finally get everything in place.

The primary idea that drives rodfrisco.com is PIAA championships … all of ‘em. Coverage? Of course. But there is a lot more to PIAA championships than just the events themselves. There is a whole season of news and events that lead to the state championships, and we will keep tabs on that.

rodfrisco.com will provide a vault of PIAA records in The Record Book, links to the best websites that cover and feature Pennsylvania scholastic sports in Must-See Links, and features like The Ticker, a daily collection of selected stories from around the state, and The Newsroom, a list of links to the state’s daily newspapers and their online sites.

There are a lot of reasons to visit rodfrisco.com daily.

But mostly, we value your input. You’re most welcome to leave comments directly on the site or contact us by e-mail with your suggestions and comments.

  1. Dean, thanks for the kind words.

    My e-mail is: rod@rodfrisco.com

  2. Rod, in your Record Book for the PIAA Boys Tennis MISC PDF file, it says you are missing the 2002 information. Does that include all information because the 2002 AAA bracket is complete and linked in another PDF and you have the AA championship results you can use. I really like your tennis stats and would like to see it completed if possible.

  3. Rod: I just found the complete results on the WPIAL site!

  4. Rod: could you pass this suggestion/complaint on to the PIAA Committee that comes up with PIAA tennis brackets? I believe this is a flaw in the brackets. In the 90s, they would seed players, the best possible way. In the current team competitions, I think there is a lack of balance. In individual competition, players could easily be seeded with a quick coaches meeting including USTA and high school season results.

For teams, usually the best two districts in PIAA Tennis are D-1 and D-7. In AA they are usually D-3 and D-1 with D-7 in the mix. The worst districts are always D-8, D-9, D-5, and D-2/D-4 sub-regional with D-3 being fairly average in AAA. D-10 has been on the rise in recent years, garnering some medals, but in the AAA draw, they always pull the WPIAL runner up or champ in the first round. My suggestion is to keep D-1 and D-7 champs on opposite sides of the bracket, playing D-8 and D-9 champs and giving D-10 (a champion) a match against someone else.

D-10 has proven to be a strong, if not deep, district in past years from Erie McDowell and Cathedral Prep in AAA and Fairview in AA. Why should the D-10 team winner in AAA have to play the WPIAL champ in the first round? That match has historically been close, 3-2 at times, and it isn’t fair for a strong D-10 team to go out in the first round nor is it fair for the WPIAL champs to play such a strong opponent early.

This is how I would suggest setting up the brackets in AAA Team:

1-1 vs. 9-1 (one of top two districts vs. one of bottom two)
    -
    10-1 vs. 3-2
    -
7-2 vs. 2-1/4-1 (WPIAL runner up vs. relatively weak subregional winner)
    -
    11-1 vs. 1-3
    -
    1-2 vs. 3-3
    -
6-1 vs. 12-1 (d6 champ usually strong state college vs. weak d12 team)
    -
3-1 vs. 1-4 (good matchup, two tough teams usually)
    -
7-1 vs. 8-1 (one of top two districts vs. one of bottom two)

In this year’s field, that would have left with a possible quarterfinal of CR North, Erie Prep, Butler, Manheim Township, Conestoga, State College, Radnor and Shady Side Academy, in my opinion the top 8 teams in the field.

  5. rod,

When Vince Lombardi’s alma mater, Fordham, dropped football, he is reported to have said, “A school without football is in danger of turning into a medieval study hall.” Let’s hope it doesn’t happen at Harrisburg.

  6. Rod……..Congrat on a very informative site,glad I found it.

  7. And I never argue with Coach Lombardi.

In all seriousness, that is exactly what is facing Harrisburg is it eliminates school sports. From what I can tell, sports is one of the most positive elements at Harrisburg. Not the only one, but an important one.

I’m all for belt-tightening. I am not for cutting the patient in two.

  8. Many thanks, Richard. Thanks for finding us.

And, of course, tell all of your friends.

  9. Rod, I live in clearfield and agree with you 100%. The bisons are undefeated but their schedule is their own worst enemy. You mentioned about not playing DuBois, how about no more of the storied rivalry with up river neighbor Curwensville (schools are about 3-4 miles apart) and The Tide are currently 5-0. Can you imagine what type of crowd they would have if they met this year?? School districts are always crying about money problems but yet a situation like this exists between two unbeaten backyard rivals within shouting distance of each other but they just let the money train go right by them. Strangely, they play them in almost every other sport including volleyball, golf, wrestling and basketball but not football. I think the Bisons have a really good, team but until the playoffs roll around we really wont know how good they are. State ranked?? Not at this point of the season. In District 9 Punxsy is in a similar situation. Currently 5-0 like the Bisons, the Chucks play a predominantly AA and A schedule. Bradford was another D9 question mark up until last weekend. The Owls were undefeated and got smashed 51-7 by 3-2 Erie Prep who I think is being overlooked by the rankers due to their mediocre record. I think the Ramblers are a better fit in the bottom end of the top 10 rather than the unbeaten Bisons or the Chucks at this point of the season. It will all come out in the wash in another month or so and then no one will have to speculate about the AAA teams from this neck of the woods which have a long and storied history of not advancing very far in the playoffs. See you around the mats in a couple of moths from now. JB

  10. Rod:

The country’s first high school state champions in football were crowned on Saturday:

Small school title game: Soldotna Stars 77, Kenai Central Kardinals 42 — The HIGHEST scoring final in state history!

Large school title game: West (Anchorage) Eagles 6, Robert Service (Anchorage) Cougars 0 — The LOWEST scoring final in state history! West committed SEVEN turnovers (six on interceptions) and still won. West is the oldest high school in Anchorage, but this is its first state football championship.

Both Soldotna and West finished with 11-0 records. In truth, if these schools were in PA, both would struggle to qualify for most district tournaments.

  11. rod, just checked your week 8 state rankings and i think bellwood lost their opener this year to tyrone and are 6-1, not 7-0. JB

  12. rod……….your website and coverage of h.s. football is outstanding……just as i expected
when i heard you were on the web. i enjoy your insight on games and teams……i too have been knocking my brains out trying to project the brackets. so far we are both right on……if red lion beats d-town i go down the drain…………in AAA if southern columbia beats
selinsgrove i think man cent. will be eighth. i don’t think they will jump weiser………….again,
thanks for your superior coverage……..there is none better
    bud…….GO BARONS
who’s your h-burg vs mcdevitt pick?

  13. Did you count the week 10 opponent in the opponents winning percentage because that would change some things and our math is different than yours.

  14. Eric, first and foremost great season.

I did count all of the week 10 opponents, but it involved some who-would-beat who guesswork. I assume that’s why we’re coming up with different numbers. It’s just not possible to come up with every possible scenario with the new power rating system, but I feel reasonably confident you’re going to fall into sixth with a win. What do you have that’s different?

  15. Bud, thanks for the nice words. These projections are tricky, at least the way I did for the website because I forecast the week 10 games and basically stuck with those forescasts, including the out-of-district opponents. But I just don’t have the time and energy to do dozens of them. My projections represent a best guess and nothing more.

I think Manheim Central will end up 7th; I gave Southern the win over Selinsgrove and still came up with Manheim in the No. 7 hole.

  16. Rod,
Wonderful effort—-a grand display by you to keeping good things going. Can we send a donation or tribute? Thanks. W

  17. Bill, How very nice and generous of you. Funny you should mention donations. As a dot com, I cannot accept donations; I am a small business.

However, I am just about ready to start selling RodFrisco.com T-shirts – simple white Ts with the red-and-black RodFrisco.com logo across the front – at a tiny profit as a way of both raising some working capital for the site and show my close friends at the IRS that my site and business are viable. I hope to have that information up on the site as soon as possible.

    Thanks again.

  18. Rod,
Think about pre-buying the shirts—avoid pen-pal and credit cards. take contributions via the business or a 501 c-3. take checks, let them clear, and send out the shirt then. there will be some record keeping but no fees to credit card companies or pay pals—-think about it before you do it the way you have planned now.

  19. Rod, Great work on the records for football. I found two discrepencies. The largest margin of victory in a AAA district championship game was in 2001 when MC beat Spring Grove 40-0. Also in that game Chris Meyers (me) had 3 TD passes. Thanks again for the great work on this!

  20. Hi Rod,
I was wondering if the PIAA has published the playoff brackets for girls basketball for 2011.
i thought you had published last year, but I forgot it.
    Can I find out the brackets (you know D1 – 1st plce vs, D3 – 2nd place)?

  21. Tony,

The brackets are available on actual pages 31 and 32 of the PIAA Handbook’s Rules and Regulations at this link: http://www.piaa.org/assets/web/documents/Section%20III.%20Rules%20and%20Regulations.pdf.

If you ever need to find out championship information, you can always find it in the Rules and Regs section of the handbook.

  22. First of all hello Mr. Frisco. i usually don’t get on here about things but thought i would give my two cent. The power ratings are a complete joke for many reason the biggest being you can beat the system. It also promotes terrible matches, not wrestling good AA schools and a good game of dodgeball. The new weight classes are just as bad. Moving 103 is good but that is it. They need to be reduced to an odd number and big guys are the problem because football to a degree is killing wrestling and the big guys don’t come out anymore. i personally think it should be 11 and then teams would have two things, competition for starting and JV teams for guys who aren’t ready for varsity and there are a ton of them out there. JH should also be 15 weights. Thanks for your time. Claudio

  23. Claudio is never at a loss for words.

Power rating will improve next year; the district will almost certainly change the ratio of team/opponent percentage from its current 66.7 / 33.3 (66.7 percent of the final power rating is the weighted team winning percentage, 33.3 percent the opponent’s) to 55 /45 percent. That alone will bring much more strength of schedule into play and should encourage strong scheduling. Should.

In addition, matches against non-PIAA schools will not be factored into the power rating unless the district develops an additional formula.

Also, I think a change in format will be discussed. I personally favor a double-elimination setup somewhat similar to District 1 to determine the four teams that go, rather than just wrestling the semifinal losers for third and fourth.

Good to hear from you, Claudio. I will miss the human seeding meeting for District 3 Team Championships.

  24. Greetings Rod!

Could you please explain the format for the District 3 basketball playoffs, as far as first round home games?

    Thanks!

  25. i think coach chaump might sign on with cdeast this evening.

  26. Heard it might not be until the 28th

  27. rod–did the process of how enrollment gets counted for co-ops pass through? just saw your blog that said it passed 22-7, but that another propsal is still on the table? Maybe i just dont understand how the bill passing process works….just would like to know, there are a few co-ops in my district….thanks & great site!!

  28. Dust, sorry for the delay. Checked with PIAA and the co-op proposal has been tabled. The current status is this: The old rule still applies, but the first reading of the new proposal that will count just 25 percent of a sending school’s enrollment passed 22-7, only to be tabled.

There is likely to be plenty of discussion regarding co-ops at the march meeting in State College. Hopefully, there will be some clarity on the matter after that meeting.

  29. Rod,
I am the track coach at Kennett High School and I am in the process of putting together a legacy board for our track program and a track hall of fame and have found your site to be extremely helpful in gathering information about our school’s state champions and record holders. Thanks.

However, I am also trying to document our school’s district champions as well (District One) and have been unable to locate records of past District One track champions. Since I have been coaching at Kennett from 1986 to the present, I have a pretty good account of our district champions during those years. I guess what I am getting at is if you know of a source that I can turn to for a list of past District One track champions? I contacted District One directly and they said they do not keep those records. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

  30. Bob,

Thanks for writing, and I’m glad that my site has been of some value to you. I do not have District 1 records compiled nor am I certain of any single source that does.

However, you might want to check with a gentleman named Art Hindle, with whom I have collaborated on PIAA track records. Art is from District 1 and it is possible he has the information you need.

    Art’s e-mail address is: crowdcor@icdc.com

    I hope this helps.

    Rod

  31. Thanks, Rod.

  32. Hey Rod, I am looking for a head wrestling coaching job. I am ready to run my own program again. I was wondering if you knew of anything that was going to come open? Thanks, Peter Horst

  33. Hey Peter,

Good to see you’re ready to get back in the game. I’m not in the loop on coaching changes quite the way I once was. I know of nothing opening up in the Harrisburg area, even though there was a fair amount of turnover in the last couple of years. Haven’t heard anything L-L, York or Berks, either but I wouldn’t be surprised if something comes open soon in D3.

Welcome back, and good luck on the hunt.

  34. Rod: I really enjoyed the format for the wrestling championships. No more of waiting for the results in the newspaper the next morning. I will never forget opening the Patriot News in the church parking lot and finding out that Jan Clark had lost his finals match to Bob Enders from Susuqehanna Township. Jan went on to win 3 state championships. Best wishes to you and your family, I’ve taken my show to D1 collegiate wrestling. I’m in charge of the table workers for the NCAA wrestling championships in Philly. Take care!

  35. Rod
I would like to first say that I respect and enjoy your take on Pa. high school sports. Your insight on the goings on of PIAA is especially helpful. I am associated with the Norristown wrestling program(though not the head coach), so you can probably guess what I’d like to comment about.
I am a little puzzled at what the real reasons for concern are regarding the number of matches that we wrestled this past year. Is this a “safety issue”? is it a “fairness issue”?. A few years back when they cut competition points back to 22, I thought it was because the football season needed to be longer and that eliminated a weekend for winter sports. OK, but I have never heard what officials believe is the “right amount” of matches for any wrestler in a season-maybe you know what “the spirit of this rule” actually is.
Our perspective-We have only 7 teams in our Suburban 1 division. That means 6 league duals all on Wednesday nights. Yes, this leaves a lot of room to be creative in utilizing the remaining points. Yes, we try to maximize the opportunities for each kid to wrestle. While some of our better kids DO compete off season in high profile events(fargo, team duals etc), others do not have the means to do so-Norristown in general and many on our team have “economic challenges”.The structure of a pool tourney gives the average kid a chance to get better by competing in season. We have used this system for several years and feel its worked well for us-we won our region and qualified for the state duals tournament, which, by the way, accounted for 8 of those 60 matches. We feel its better for our average kids to go 4-4 or even 3-5 at a pool tourney than to go to the Beast or Powerade 0-2 or 1-2 and be sitting in the bleachers by the end of the first day, Usually, at a pool tourney your better kids get to wrestle ALL the best competition in their weight, so they benefit as well.
That is our perspective. While I realize we do have more matches than other teams, I’m not sure sure who made this an issue-other coaches, PIAA officials, press etc. We have had questions from some local coaches, but they are certainly welcome to get matches for their kids the same way. Besides, I would bet that almost every kid at the “Hershey level”, counting the offseason, gets a couple hundred matches a year any way. What really is the difference in 10 more by one team spread out over 3 months?
    Thanks
    Steve Snyder

  36. Steve, thanks for writing.

First, I’ll tell you I have only one concern about Norristown’s schedule, and that was the dual event you wrestled the day after Norristown was eliminated from the PIAA Team Championships. My guess is you had a contractual obligation to the event, and that it was scheduled in case Norristown didn’t qualify for state duals. Even so, it seems odd to go from state duals to a five-match event without a break and with sections on the horizon.

But beyond that, I have no problem because I believe each coach and each school should be able to determine their own philosophy and how they want to schedule. And I am not a fan of top-down decisions like this one.

I can tell you this: There is a substantial bias among several members of the PIAA steering committee against multiple-dual events in particular and pooled events and a lot of matches in general.

For instance, one committee member has been baying for several years that all dual meets, regardless of format, should cost one competition point. My counter to that a couple of years back was competition points should then shift to individuals instead of teams since the underlying philosophy is clearly one match, one point. Once you used up those points as a n individual, you’re done until the post season. That didn’t go over so well.

Other committee members keep saying that these pooled tournaments are “killing wrestling,” claiming that fans want to see local rivalry duals and maybe tournament finals. Well, two things: (1) By and large, the rivalry duals still exist for the most part, and (2) unless we start adding paintball battles to tournaments, I don’t know what will put meat in the seats. (I can’t stand paintball, by the way.)

So when the committee met on Thursday, it really didn’t have anyone to advocate for pooled tournaments. Indeed, I was the one who pointed out your schedule was comprised mostly of pooled events and compared Norristown to Towanda, which wrestled as many, if not more, duals than anyone in the state. My point was that dual meet events aren’t the enemy; there are several ways to wrestle a lot of matches.

Of course, the dirty little secret is that schools that wrestle qualify for district and PIAA events pile up a lot of matches, as many as 8-9 dual matches and up to 16 or so in the post-season depending on the district.

But I will say I think a lot of people are concerned about excessive matches, especially since the weight control program forces wrestlers to keep their weight down throughout the season. I think a season total of 40-45 is plenty, but that’s a personal opinion. I really don’t like other people establishing limits and rules and what-not, especially when the rules-makers hold a certain perspective. Then again, I’m a Tea Party guy, so that’s to be expected.

    Rod

  37. Rod
Thanks much for your response. I understand how one might wonder about the event right after the state duals competition. It was, in fact, about honoring an obligation we had made to the Deiruff AD. Unfortunately, earlier in the season we could not make it to the McDonough Md duals. This did leave somewhat of a gap in our schedule( 4 competition pts). We began to put out inquiries to schools who might have openings for their events later in the season(as coaches often do in this situation). The only thing that we got a response on was the Huskie Duals. Yes, we realized it was the Saturday during State Duals, but at the time, we were not certain we would qualify let alone make it to the 3rd day.Suppose we did not make the top four at districts or that Solanco(our first round match), was not missing 3 of its best kids. We could have been done the previous Saturday or Monday, and had nothing til sections roughly 2 weeks later. Given these scenarios, I doubt as many questions, if any would have been raised. As a matter of fact, we did not pressure our kids to make it that Saturday morning. We said the bus would be leaving as scheduled and we’d go with whoever could make it-again because we wanted to fulfill the obligation. Well, that;’s how it happened and thanks for the consideration.

  38. Hi! I was wondering if you knew where I might be able to get a copy of a video of the Midd-West Girls soccer game at Milton Hershey HS against Villa Maria on Nov. 13, 2010? If you are able to help in ANY way, please let me know! It would be GREATLY appreciated!! Our videographer’s computer crashed so we don’t have anything!! : )
    Thanks,
    Michelle

  39. Hi Michelle,

Sorry, but this request is way beyond my purview. The only thing I can advise you is to contact either school to see if they have a copy and are able to provide you with one. The schools’ contact information can be found here: http://www.piaa.org/schools/directory/default.aspx

Best of luck. Sorry I wasn’t any help.

    Rod

  40. Rod,

Saw the story about your Hall of Fame induction. You’re in pretty good company….congratulations.

    Bill Scott

  41. Many thanks, Bill. Good company indeed. It really is humbling to go into a hall with so many people I’ve known and respected.

  42. Rod -Would like to offer belated congratulations as well. Much deserved!

  43. Rod, good afternoon! Check out lordcdo.yolasite.com

    Mr. Washington

  44. Would somebody post the time line of the new enrollment classifications.
For instance, when the enrollment figures are due from the schools and
when the PIAA will publish their enrollments with the new classification parameters

  45. I know Luke Hagy has committed to Cornell University, has Zach Wilk also committed to Cornell?

  46. Ken.

I guess I should have asked Zach that when I chatted with him before the state championship game. But as recently as the state semis he said he was keeping his options open for any late D-I interest. So as far as I know, he hasn’t committed.

  47. I read in today Bedford paper that they will be a change in the State Wrestling Tournament. For years I have been writing letter to the Editor in all the Local Papers to change the way the Reginaolds were run
why not make District 7 and 10 one Region and cut back one place to go to the State. And then make
District 5 and 9 and 6 one regional and do the same with them this would give the smallers schools in
District 5 and 9 a better chance to make it to state if they would make Bedford and Tyrone and Central
Cambria and Somerset go up to AAA. And in District 9 make Ridgeway and Brookville go up. I think the
smaller schools in District 5 6 and 9 are not being given a fair chance by the PIAA. And in District 5
Bedford run everything and if the PIAA do not do anything to them they don’t worry about the other District 5 school. I would like you comments maybe I am wrong.
