Hello Rod, just wanted to say you do great coverage of all the sports. Really enjoyed your enthusiasm with the possible weight class changes and pursuit to get answers. What are your thoughts of the National Wrestling governing body for high school wrestling and decisions at this last meeting?
I think they made the right decision on weight classes. Since there was no consensus to go to the Option B set (starting weight was 106), then it’s best to leave it be. Still means 103 and 112 will be polluted with freshmen, but so be it.
Was quite disappointed that NFHS didn’t adopt the continuation rule that Bob Derr of Lititz proposed. Bob essentially wanted to see the college rule (action starts inside the outer the circle, it continues even if the defensive wrestler has gone beyond the boundary). I would have LOVED to see that rule in place this season.
Rod – I missed the chat, any way of archiving it?
As far as continuation – I think that some problems could occur with wrestlers being off of the mat & on the gym floor, particularly in the upper weights.
O, sorry you missed it. I’m going to do one Thursday at 1 p.m. Still looking for the best time and date to get as many chatters as possible.
I hadn’t thought about setting up a chat archive until you mentioned it. So I set one up. Here’s the link for tonight’s chat: http://www.rodfrisco.com/chat-archive/
Re continuation and mat space: Yep, that’s a problem. But it’s the only problem, IMHO.
Rod, nice job with your site…I was wondering if you were at the meet back in 1984 when Mike Spangler of South Western took his three gold medals in a breathtaking performance….
Nap, thanks for the nice words. I was not at the ’84 state championships; I was at the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat then and was not the track writer, although for some reason I was there in 1983 when Clinton Davis of Steel Valley had that amazing performance.
But sadly, I missed Spangler’s performance in 1984. I’ve heard it was unbelievable, especially his run in the 400-meter finals.
Maria, thanks for writing. I was uncertain about the status of the rule; now I know.
First, would be willing to entertain discussion on the rule? Of course I would. One of the reasons my site exists is to promote healthy discussion about topics related to scholastic sports. I will post your concerns ASAP and direct readers to comment on the matter. There is a section for comments at the bottom of every post.
Second, my opinion on the rule? It’s ridiculous. I despise any rule that penalizes an athlete’s ability to participate when the athlete is not at fault. This rule was inserted however many years ago because someone had a wild hair about one school dominating an event? Why else would such a rule exist? It was likely sold to the powers that be as a matter of fairness. But is it fair to athlete who has actually produced a qualifying effort only to be told “no, you can’t compete” because she attends a school with other quality athletes? That is ludicrous. Let the standards and the efforts rule the day, not a nasty little piece of bureaucracy.
The hanna has a lot of young talent this year. Colby grant is a stud and only in 10th grade. Leroy McClain has led the freshman team in scoring, then the jv team last year in scoring and interceptions and this year he has a chance to compete on the varisity level. He will do great things. the kid is super fast and very athletic. Time will tell. I cant wait until the hanna goes against cv so we can see what these young guys can do. FRIDAY NIGHT AT 7pm be there.
