There are few names in American wrestling as recognizable as the Peery name.

Between Rex Peery, the family patriarch, and his sons Hugh and Ed, the Peerys won an astounding nine NCAA individual wrestling championships.  Rex and Ed enjoyed outstanding coaching careers; Hugh went on to a distinguished career in dentistry.

Sadly, Ed Peery, who won two PIAA wrestling championships at Shaler High School near Pittsburgh, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 75.

You can read a brief story from themat.com here.

Our condolences to Ed’s wife Gretchen and the remaining Peery family.

Here is the PIAA baseball and softball quarterfinal scoreboard for Thursday, June 10.

THURSDAY, APRIL 29

Football
Oil City’s Ben Koyack to Notre Dame. I’m tempted to say that Koyack scratched Penn State off the list after getting a load of those QBs in PSU’s Blue-White game, but he was ahead of the curve. He ditched Penn State before that. From Frank Bodani of the York Daily Record.

Incredibly sad news about former Wilmington HS player Clint DeRosa, who passed away last Friday. He was a captain on Wilmington’s PIAA Class AA championship team. From the New Castle News.

Track and field
Imagine how fast the Cheltenham 4×400 relay (3:13.6) would be if twins Brandon and Bernard Bennett-Green had been quadruplets. From the Philadelphia Inquirer.

I originally opened this story because of the headline trumpeting the Methacton girls’ track team’s 40th straight dual meet win. But I was fascinated to learn that “Methacton” means “Evil Hill” in the local native Indian language. No wonder they decided to eschew the English translation when they named the school.

Another athlete, Rachel Wolinsky of Hempfield Area, fights back from an awful injury. From the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Volleyball
It’s “Recovery From Injury Day” at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Here’s a story on Montour volleyball player Andy Stefko after his unfortunate encounter with a pane of glass.

Softball
I had to include Andy Sandrik’s notebook in the Carlisle Sentinel because he actually found a player hitting .737, which water-into-wine stuff in the days of the uber-pitcher.

The PIAA Class AAAA runner-up last year, Shaler, gears up for another playoff run with every starter back. From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Miscellaneous
When former Canonsburg wrestling star Manuel “Buns” Pihakis said “there are 100 people more deserving than me” to be in the fast-growing WPIAL Hall of Fame, he’s being a little disingenuous. Pihakis is one of the true greats in PIAA and WPIAL wrestling history. I’ve always liked Pihakis. Was extremely said to see that Frank Sarris, the owner of Sarris Candies in Canonsburg, had passed.
